Hispanics
The Hispanic community has the second highest rate of diagnoses among minorities. HIV was the 6th leading cause of death for Latino men and 5th for Latinas, aged 25–44, in 2004.

 HIV vs. AIDS
Doctors consider an HIV-positive person to have AIDS only after the virus has worn down her immune system so much that she's vulnerable to infection, such as pneumonia, that she could otherwise fight off.

Programs and Services

MAAC achievements include but are not limited to the organization, marketing, recruiting, and sponsorship of many annual events including:

  • African American Male Conference
  • Annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS Praise Kick-Off
  • The “Beauty and Barber Workshop”
  • Women of Color Workshops I, II, III, IV, V, VI
  • Latino Fest
  • Junteenth, “Jammin’ for Health”
  • National Testing Day Events
  • World AIDS Day Events
  • Faith-Based Prevention forums

These highlight only a fraction of the sponsorship, education and collaboration efforts MAAC has been a part of in the greater Peoria area for the past fifteen years. MAAC, in conjunction with various community stakeholders, has employed many innovative efforts to encourage communities of color to be tested, and to prevent Teen Pregnancy, poverty, STI’s and HIV/AIDS from destroying our community.

The MAAC Community Council is a permanent networking component of this organization. Representatives from various local HIV/AIDS service organizations meet monthly to develop programs and interventions. This networking and collaboration brings together all STD, HIV/AIDS, and youth advocacy related service providers to plan events, discuss gaps in services, and to contribute to the success of all agencies in providing superior pregnancy prevention, STD, and HIV/AIDS education, prevention, and care.
